Using RSS Feeds for Job Search
Posted by Praneeth Patlola | Filed under jobsearch, rssfeeds
It is quite tiresome to go to each of the portals and keep yourself updated with the new listings. One alternative would be to get registered and subscribe email updates. Talking to many users we find that this is quite furstrating to users when they receive requirements into their inbox along with their other personal and professional communications. Users many a times tend to create and maintain emailid’s for just the purpose of getting emails from these portals.
Here is a small solution for this. Most of the website which follow the standards of web2.0 implement RSS feeds for the user search criteria. Users can add and manage these RSS feeds using their GoogleReader, desktop email client (which pushes all the RSS updates into sepcified folders) and so on.
One advantage of this is to track down all the updates on daily basis. You can cut down your timespent on browsing requirements across internet by almost 90% compared to the current search on portals. The biggest pain point we have seen is to search across the jobs in craigslist but as good they are, it does have RSS feeds. We have compiled the the subscriptions into based on keywords (developer, admin, lead, manager etc..).
Below are the shared links out of our google reader subscriptions:
Craigslist
DevBistro
Dice
hotjobs
indeed
monster
net-temps
You can create your own subscriptions by pulling in the RSS feed link out of specific portal. However, the craiglist subscription is going to be tiresome if you are planning to have a feeds searching all the cities. We have created the same for you.
Here is a file which you need to save as .xml and import into your google reader to get the pre-compiled subscriptions:
GoogleReader OPML_file for rss feeds from job portals
Unfortunately, we could not get the same for some portals like careerbuilder.com and corp-corp.com as they are quite not a web2.0 portals.

Posted by Praneeth Patlola | Filed under jobsearch
Searching jobs based with startup companies involved a keen research and case study. Typically with startup on day you might be delivering posts, pizzas along with taking stragetic decisions while having happy hour with your team. It is is also a hesitation in many people to join startups guaging the amount of risk. Well, as they say, No Venture No Gain. It is all the passion and attitude which serves the purpose of being in startups. A general tendency we have observed with people seeking job with startups are :
1. Keep themselves updated with their area of interest and track down innovations around the industry and firms sprouting out.
2. Try to get involved in startup conference/summit and also their intereset specific conferences.
3. Constantly blog, conncect and penetrate into the startup networks.
4. Never loose contacts with collegues or previous collegues having similar spirits and mindsets.
There are even few venture funded startups which can be tracked down using a portal ventureloop.com . startuply.com, npost.com, startupzone.com, startupers.com, hotstartupjobs.com are a list of startup job portals. Again, the best way to find your dream startup job is always getting into network and researching.. so stay connected.

IT Consulting/Contracting occupies a huge piece of market share in staffing. Here goes a small list of portal which has more focusing on IT consuting/contractin postions:
dice.com, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, hotjobs.com, net-temps.net, devbistro.com , corp-corp.com, nationjobs.com, topusajobs.com, sologig.com, computerjobs.com, virtuva.com, jobserve.us, hotgigs.com, iitjobs.com.
These portals are popular as they are used by numerous staff agumentation firms and recruiters all across the industry. There are many developer and other consultants who have been dragged into these portal for the same reason of recruiters concertration on them. Indeed.com and other job search engines listed in the previous post can also be used to search many of these websites. There might be a disadvantage of not having the latest job hr-by-hr using other vertical job search engines though.

Using web 2.0 for job search
Posted by Praneeth Patlola | Filed under jobsearch
Fortunately, there are few web startups which applied web2.0 solutions to staffing industry. Indeed.com, Simplyhired.com, craigslist.com, linkup.com, jobster.com, twitterjobsearch.com , job-search-engine.com are few of the vertical search engines for Job Search. These vertical search engines crawl across the web and categorize the data in the best way.
